A reading from the book of Mark 14:1-15:47: The chief priests and scribes wanted to arrest Jesus, but were concerned his followers would become angry and did not want a riot during the Passover. However, Jesus knew that he would soon be put to death and he told his disciples that one of them would soon betray him. The disciples were upset and shocked by the news, but in fact, Judas, 1 of the 12 disciples, had gone to the chief priests and they agreed to pay him if he handed Jesus over to them.
As the disciples celebrated Passover with Jesus, Jesus broke the bread and said, "Take it; this is my body". He also gave them the wine and said, "This is my blood."
Jesus told Peter, 1 of the 12, that before the cock (a rooster) crowed twice, Peter was going to deny him 3 times. Peter said, to Jesus that he would never deny him.
Peter was told to keep watch for the soldiers while Jesus prayed for an hour, but fell asleep. When the soldiers came, Judas, Jesus' betrayer, kissed Jesus to let Jesus' enemies know Jesus was the one they were after. When the guards found Peter, they asked him 3 times if he was with Jesus and Peter denied he did 3 times as he was scared.
Jesus was put on the cross where he died.
Today's gospel started off with Jesus riding into Jerusalem and crowds singing "Hosanna" which means "save us." The chief priests were jealous of Jesus and so they decided they wanted to get rid of him. Jesus knew that his disciples were weak - Judas betrayed him, Peter fell asleep when he was supposed to be keeping watch and later denied he knew Jesus. However, Jesus also knew that he loved them, like he loves us, and that he was going to give his life for them and us. Jesus was nailed to the cross, or crucified, where he then died.
