A reading from the Gospel according to John 6:1-15: Jesus sailed across the Sea of Galilee and a large crowd followed him because they knew about all the miracles that he was performing like healing the sick. He went up the mountain with his disciples to share a Passover meal and saw the crowd of 5000 people coming. Jesus asked his disciples, "Where can we get food for all these people so they can eat too?" Jesus was asking his disciples this to see if they could figure it out, as Jesus knew. Andrew, one of the disciples, said, "There is a boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fishes, but that won't be enough to feed all of them. There are too many people!" However, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and broke it, giving the people as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish, giving everyone as much as they wanted. He then told the disciples to collect all the leftovers in baskets so nothing would be wasted. There were 12 large baskets of leftovers from those 5 loaves of bread! The people said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world." Jesus then retreated to the mountain as he knew the people were going to carry him off and make him king.
Here we see another of Jesus' miracles. Jesus is about to share a meal with his disciples and then he sees the people have followed him and he feels the need to care for them too. He feeds 5000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish and there are still 12 baskets of leftovers! That is a LOT of people!
1) How many loaves and fish did the boy have and how large was the crowd Jesus fed? (5 loaves and 2 fish fed over 5000 people with 12 baskets of leftovers!)
2) What did Jesus do before he broke the bread? (He gave thanks to God!)
3) Do you give thanks to God before each meal? Do you have a favorite meal-time prayer?
