A reading from the book of Mark 1:21-28: Jesus was preaching in Capernaum in the synagogue, the Jewish house of worship, on the Sabbath. There was a man with an evil or "unclean" spirit in him. Jesus told the evil spirit to leave the man alone and get out and the evil spirit left the man. The people were amazed and news of Jesus spread throughout Galilee!
In this Gospel, we start out this story with Jesus preaching on the Jewish Sabbath or Saturday, known as the original 7th day in the Creation story - the day of rest. The town of Capernaum is Jesus' home base where he lives and is accepted among his Jewish followers. We hear about the power of Jesus in this Gospel - that it extends beyond these followers! He is the ruler of all! He can make even "unclean" or evil spirits obey him.
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) When is the Jewish Sabbath? (Saturday)
2) What did Jesus do that amazed the people? (cast out the evil spirit)
3) What did casting out the evil spirit show the people? (the power of Jesus!)
