A reading from the book of Luke 2:22-40: Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple for the purification rites required by the law of Moses. There was a good God-loving man there named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had promised Simeon that he would meet the Messiah before he died. Simeon saw Jesus and knew that Jesus was the Messiah and that Jesus would do great things! Simeon was so happy to meet Jesus and told Mary how special Jesus was! There was also an old woman named Anna at the temple who prayed all day and all night. She too praised God when she met Jesus! After they visited the temple, Mary and Joseph took Jesus back to Nazareth where he grew up strong, filled with wisdom, and did God's work.
This week we learn that those who were waiting for the Messiah or the king of the Jewish people recognized Jesus! They knew how special he was and that he would do great things! Mary and Joseph were amazed at what was said about Jesus and that these people knew who he was even though Jesus looked just like everyone else!
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) What were the names of the people who recognized Jesus as the Messiah at the temple? (Simeon, Anna)
2) How did Simeon and Anna react when they met Jesus? (They were excited and praised God!)
3) What happened after Jesus received the rites at the temple and Simeon and Anna recognized him? (Jesus went back to Nazareth to grow up.)
