Jesus was teaching the crowds on the shores of Lake Gennesaret. He saw 2 boats and the fisherman washing their nets. Jesus got in one of the boats, the one that belonged to Simon and told him to row a short ways from shore and where Jesus finished teaching. When he was done, he told Simon to cast his nets to catch more fish. Simon replied to Jesus, "Teacher, we have worked hard all night and have not caught any fish, but because you are telling us to, we will cast them again." So, Simon put his nets back in the water. They caught so many fish that it caused their nets to start breaking and they signaled to other boats around them to come help them! They caught so many fish that it almost caused the boats to sink! Simon, and his friends brothers James and John were amazed and realized that Jesus was special. Jesus told them to come with him as now they would be fishers of men! They left everything that they had and followed Jesus.
This is the gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Have you ever gone fishing? Did you use a fishing pole? A net? Both?
Why would someone go fishing? Yes, for food, to sell, and even for fun.
In the gospel today, we heard about a fishing miracle. Do you remember what Jesus did? He told Simon Peter to throw his fishing net into the deep water so that he could catch some fish. Simon had already tried fishing all night long but didn’t catch anything. He was discouraged but told Jesus he would do it. Do you remember what happened? Yes, they
caught so many fish that the boat almost sank, and they caught way too many fish for one man to carry himself. Simon Peter had to ask his friends to help him.
Jesus wanted everyone to know that he was God’s son. He performed this miracle to show people God’s awesome power. So many people needed to hear the good news about Jesus, and he needed help spreading the word. He wanted helpers. Jesus asked Simon Peter and his friends to be His helpers. Now, instead of trying to catch fish in a net he would try to gather people and teach them all about Jesus. Jesus told Simon Peter he was like a fisher of men!
Jesus wants all of us to be fishers of men. How can we do that?
We can tell others how much God loves them and teach them about Jesus by being loving, kind, and forgiving just as He is to us. We are all followers of Christ just like Simon Peter and his friends.
