A reading from the gospel of Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Jesus went to Nazareth and stood up in the synagogue and began teaching to the people. He opened the scroll from the prophet Isaiah and read. Many people came to hear Jesus and they were happy to listen to Him and hear the good news. Jesus said, “The spirit of the Lord is with me, and He has given me the job to tell the good news. He sent me to tell the sinners that they can be forgiven, the blind that they can see again, and the broken hearted that they can be free to tell everyone that this is the time when God is with us. When Jesus was done talking, he sat down and told the people that all the Old Testament scriptures would be complete because He was here.
This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
In today’s gospel reading we heard more about Jesus’ life as an adult. Let’s review: A few weeks ago, we learned about Jesus’ baptism by who? (his cousin John the Baptist). Then last week He performed his first miracle. Does you remember where that was? Yes, the wedding at Cana. What happened? Yes, Jesus turned the water into wine. Now today we heard about Jesus as our teacher and savior. We read how he stood the synagogue to make an announcement. A synagogue was the place the Jewish people would go to pray, just like we come to our church. He read from a scroll from the prophet Isaiah which is like the bible we would read from today, but words are written on a roll of paper.
The announcement was very important. He was getting ready to teach and preach God's message. He decided to begin in his hometown. He went to the synagogue. He told them how God sent someone to save them and help all people. Everyone listening to Jesus heard this good news and were so happy. But who was the one who God had sent?
Jesus told everyone that the words he just read were about Him. Jesus told the people that He was the one whom God sent. Jesus came to share the message of His Father’s love and forgiveness. He came to show us how to love others and serve God’s kingdom. Isn’t that great? For many years everyone was waiting for God to send someone to help them and who was that person? That’s right, Jesus. He has the power to do miracles and save lives. Do you know that every kind thing we do is a way to serve God!
Challenge for this week:
Continue to JAM for Jesus and let’s make a difference helping others like Jesus did.
Questions for the Week:
1) What was Jesus’ first miracle? (Turned water into wine at the wedding at Cana) 2) Who baptized Jesus? (His cousin, John the Baptist) 3) What did Jesus do at the synagogue (or church)? (Teach and give his announcement) 4) Why did God send Jesus to us? (To show us how to love, forgive, serve, and to save us)
