Children's Liturgy of the Word 1.2.2022

A reading from the book of Matthew Chapter 2:1-12.

After Jesus was born, the magi from the East asked King Herrod, "Where is the newborn King of the Jews?"  King Herrod did not know, but he assembled all of his scribes and priests and asked them.  They answered that the prophets wrote that he would be born in Bethlehem.  Herrod called the magi and told them to find the baby and then let him know where the baby was so that he too could go and welcome him.  The 3 magi set out and followed the star and found the baby with his mother Mary and when they saw him they gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  They were warned in a dream not to return tell King Herrod about the baby and so they went home another way.

This weekend we celebrate Epiphany which is when the magi or 3 kings visit Jesus.  They brought him valuable gifts - gold, frankincense, and myrh - gifts for a king, even though he was born in a stable because they knew that he was the future king of the Jews.  King Herrod also realized how important Jesus was and lied to the 3 magi, telling them he wanted to welcome the baby when he really wanted to hurt him.  Luckily, the magi were warned in a dream to not to return to King Herrod and they went home another way.
