The Gospel according to Luke 3:10-18: The people asked John the Baptist, “What shall we do?” He replied, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do this.” Even the tax collectors who came to be baptized asked John the Baptist what they should do. “Teacher what should we do?” He replied, “Collect no more than what is needed.” Soldiers asked him as well. All the people had so much questioning in their hearts about John and wondered if John the Baptist was the Messiah. He told them, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy, and He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” This is the gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ
Have you ever counted the gifts that are under the tree? Lots of children count all the presents under the tree. They compare how many gifts each person has. Sometimes people are sad when they find out some people have more gifts them them. Would that make you sad? Have you ever felt that way?
In the gospel today, John the Baptist was teaching the people what was important. Do you remember what that was? He told them to share their coats and food etc. Yes, John the Baptist was telling them that the true meaning of Christmas is not the presents we receive (or the number of gifts) but in sharing what we have like our time, talents, and treasures each day with others. By not thinking of ourselves and sharing with others, we receive the gift of Joy! Today we are celebrating Gaudette Sunday and light the 3rd candle of Advent - pink! The pink cande stands for "joy" and Gaudette means "Rejoice"
