A reading from the book of Matthew 2:1-12: Magi or wisemen from the east arrived in Jerusalem following the star, looking for Jesus. They asked Herod who was the king, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews?" Herod told the magi that he did not know, but to find the baby and then come back and tell him where the baby was so that he could welcome him. Secretly, Herod planned to hurt the baby as he wanted to be king and he didn't want to give up power. The magi continued on their way, following the star and found baby Jesus. They brought Jesus gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The magi were warned in a dream to not tell Herod where baby Jesus was, so they returned to their home going a different way so they would not have to tell Herod.
Today we celebrate Epiphany! Epiphany is when the magi or wisemen visit Jesus. The magi knew how special Jesus was and therefore traveled a long way to welcome him. We too should work that hard to welcome Jesus into our life every day. They brought Jesus gifts that were not ordinary gifts, but gifts that were ordinarily given to a king because they knew how important he was.
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) What is Epiphany? (when we celebrate the wisemen visiting Jesus)
2) How did the magi know where to find Jesus? (by following the star)
3) What gifts did the magi bring? (gold, frankincense, and myrrh)
