A reading from the book of Mark 1:14-20: After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee to proclaim the gospel. As he passed by the Sea of Galilee and saw Simon and his brother Andrew fishing. He called to them and said, "Come with me! I'll make you fishers of men!" They left their nets and they followed him. He walked further and saw James and John. They too were fishing and left thier father Zebedee and their boat to follow him.
Last week we heard the same story in the gospel of John. This reading is in the gospel of Matthew. This is because the gospel accounts and the Bible itself were written by multiple people, all inspired by God! While all the details aren't exactly the same (In this Gospel, John the Baptist isn't with Jesus like he was last week) the main events are the same - Jesus has come and is carrying out God's plan. Think of this last Christmas - you, your brother and sisters, and your parents may all focus on different parts of the day, but it is all the same story and it all still happened. The gospels are like that. So, here, we are again told that Jesus is gaining followers, namely Simon, who we learned last week Jesus named Peter, his brother Andrew, James, and John - all disciples. They left their livelihood - the way they earned a living - and their families to go follow Jesus. He was that important to them!
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) What were the men doing before they decided to follow Jesus (fishing)
2) Who were the 4 disciples that went with Jesus (Andrew, Simon (Peter), James, and John)
3) What are you willing to give up for Jesus? (Talk to your child about how Lent is coming up - 40 days where we often give something up to help us to grow closer to God)
