A reading from the book of Mark 1:7-11: John the Baptist said to the people, "Someone that is greater than me will come. I have baptized you with water. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
Jesus came from Nazareth and John baptized him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came out of the water, he saw the heavens part and the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. God said, "You are my beloved son, and with you I am pleased."
In this Gospel, John the Baptist's words are coming true - Jesus has come and is carrying out God's plan. John baptizes Jesus. When you were little, you were baptized too, welcoming you into the Catholic faith. Water was poured over your head and you were blessed in the name of the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. That was the beginning of your Catholic journey.
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) Who was John the Baptist talking about when he said "someone greater than me will come?" (Jesus)
2) Who baptized Jesus and where was he baptized? (John the Baptist, the Jordan River)
3) Ask your parents about your baptism and was like!
