A reading from the book of Mark 9:2-10: Jesus took Peter, James and John up on the mountain to pray. Jesus was "transfigured" before them looking incredible, with his clothes turning a dazzling white. Then the prophets Elijah and Moses appeared and started talking to Jesus! A voice came down from heaven and said, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." All of a sudden, Elijah and Moses were gone and they no longer saw anyone but Jesus! The disciples were amazed! As they went down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they saw until the Son of Man rose from the dead. The disciples agreed, but were confused...What did "rising from the dead" mean?
In this gospel reading we again see similarities of Jesus to these early prophets Moses and Elijah. The disciples see that Jesus is doing God's work like those prophets and that he is God's son.
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) Who were the disciples who went with Jesus on the mountain? (Peter, John, and James)
2) Who were the prophets that Jesus spoke to on the mountain? (Moses and Elijah)
3) How do you think you would feel if you saw what the disciples saw? Do you think you could keep the secret and not tell anyone?
