A reading from the Gospel according to Luke 1:39-56: Jesus's mother Mary set out to see her cousin Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary, the baby in Elizabeth's tummy jumped for joy! The Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and she joyfully exclaimed, "Blessed are you and blessed is your baby! What an honor that the mother of my Lord came to see me! " Mary replied, "My soul shouts the greatness of God and He has blessed me! God is merciful, shows strength, and is powerful. He feeds the hungry and keeps his promises." Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about 3 months and then went home.
In this Gospel, Elizabeth sees Mary and recognizes that Mary's baby is special because He is God's son before He is even born! Mary replies that she loves God with all her heart and that she is God's servant. She proclaims the greatness of God and how he cares for and keeps promises to his people.
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That is when Mary was Assumed (or went up) to Heaven to be with God. Mary went to heaven because she was God's faithful servant and followed God. We can ask Mary to help us follow God as well by saying the Hail Mary:
Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
