A reading from the book of John 20:19-31: The disciples locked themselves in a house as they were scared that they too would be put to death like Jesus. However, Jesus appeared and came up to them saying, "Peace be with you!" Jesus showed them the holes in his hand and his side. The disciples rejoiced! Jesus was alive! "Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you." He breathed on them, giving them the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The disciple Thomas was not with them and when the other disciples told him, he did not believe that they had seen Jesus. Thomas told the others disciples that until he saw for himself and touched Jesus' wounds he would not believe. A week later, Jesus again appeared to the disciples in the locked room and this time Thomas was with them. He touched Jesus' wounds and believed. However, Jesus told him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”"
Today we rejoice like the disciples that Jesus is alive. God understands that we may doubt just like Thomas. However, we are given these stories in the Bible so that we may be blessed and know the truth about Jesus.
Questions to ask your child about this week's lesson:
1) Why did the disciples lock themselves in the house? (because they were afraid that they could be put to death like Jesus)
2) Which disciple doubted that Jesus was alive? (Thomas)
3) How do you think the disciples felt when they saw Jesus?
