Mom, how many houses are there in our neighborhood? This is the question that Abby McCarthy asked after returning from Fusion, our middle school program, and hearing about Scare Away Hunger. She proceeded to add her personal story to a flyer she had picked up at church, asked her mom to take her to have 250 copies printed and set out on her own to distribute the flyer to each and every house in her neighborhood.
Abby placed the first flyer at 6:30pm and by 10am the following morning neighbors had placed food on her porch for the McKinney Community Food Pantry. Her generous neighbors continued contributing a small mountain of canned goods because one of our very own parishioners heard the story of need in McKinney, and she did what some fail to do. She acted.
"My dream for next year is to fill the shelves so totally that there is food to carry them through the winter. We can do it by all working together in these grass roots efforts. Abby McCarthy has become my heroine. There are many like her, but her story was the one that found its way to me and into my heart." - Nancye from 3e McKinney
Abby is an 8th grader at Prosper Middle School. She recently moved to Texas with her family from New Hampshire. We are so proud to have the McCarthy's at St Gabriel and are especially proud to see the true giving spirit in one of our youth. Abby is an example to us all to give from the heart, take initiative and serve those around us!
